My First Vegan Dessert

One of my best mate’s Mum is exceptional at making desserts – truly exceptional. Some of the best desserts I ever had in my life were from this marvelous woman.

So one day in my teenage years, I was hanging out with my friend at his parent’s house and his Mum had made chocolate mousse for my best friend to enjoy, who is also vegan. The great friend that he was, he offered me some of the chocolate mousse.

This was over 10 years ago when I just started living a vegan lifestyle, so I had never even thought of the concept of a vegan chocolate mousse. In fact, this would have been the first vegan dessert that I had ever tried.

Never one to turn down a treat, I had a try of the chocolate mousse. To sum it up shortly, it blew my mind.

I couldn’t believe it. I was shocked at how velvety the texture was, how rich the chocolate tasted, and how it all blended together so perfectly.

His Mum then proceeded to tell me that it was made out of avocados. If my mind wasn’t completely blown before, it was thoroughly blown now.

Avocado Toast, yes. Guacamole, yes. But a healthy dessert? Surely she was havin’ a laugh.

This was the moment when my eyes really were open to potential of plant foods. I mean, if you can turn avocados into chocolate mousse, then anything was possible!

Seems to good to be true. A sinful dessert with so many health benefits from avocados, such as providing a range of essential vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and heart-healthy monounsaturated fats with 0% cholesterol. Luckily for us, it is!

Since this time, I had tried other avocado chocolate mousses recipes that purported to be rich and decadent. Needless to say, I was always a little underwhelmed. Maybe it was due to the fact I had such lofty standards after literally trying the best mousse in existence for my first experience.

There would always be an issue with the mousse where it didn’t quite have that “wow” factor. It was too bitter. It tasted too much like avocado. It’s texture was too stodgy. Sound familiar?

After years of experimenting. I have finally been able to get my avocado chocolate mousses on par with the very first one I had. Well, maybe not on par, but just the level below.

So, what’s the secret?

Not my hand ;)

How do you make the perfect avocado chocolate mousse?

What I have found to be the issue with other avocado mousses is that they neglect one of the following items:

  • They don’t include dates
  • They don’t include salt
  • They don’t include a sweetener (including vanilla extract)

May not sound like deal breakers, but trust me, they are. Without these ingredients, I find the avocado mousses are too bitter or don’t have the consistency that you desire. Particularly when an avocado mousse are just naturally more dense than the standard “fluffy” type of mousse.

To make the perfect avocado chocolate mousse, you will need pitted dates (soaked), raw cocoa powder, plant milk, sweetener, vanilla extract and salt. That’s it!

The dates will provide the mousse with a nice sweetness, but more importantly, a smooth velvety texture once it’s blended together with the avocados.

And the reason why salt is so important? Well, not only does it have the ability to enhance the sweet flavors from the dates, sweetener and vanilla extract, but also balance the richness of this dessert and make cocoa taste less bitter.

Without these ingredients, you’ll have the type of avocado mousse that supports the claim that vegan desserts just aren’t as good as the real thing.

Topping Tips

This is where your creativity comes in!

There are a number of ways you can add toppings to this avocado chocolate mousse to give it a distinct taste each time you make it.

In the pictures, you will see the toppings were red currants, desiccated coconut, mint and a vegan chocolate Santa! I had these laying around the kitchen when I decided to make this recipe – however, I also love using these toppings when I have them available:

  • crumbled biscuit (can’t go past Oreos!)
  • crushed nuts (in particular, pistachios or peanuts)
  • berries of any variety
  • pretzels (trust me – salty pretzels work!)
  • vegan ice cream or whipped cream

If you’re looking for an avocado chocolate mousse recipe which is rich and velvety smooth, then this healthy recipe is for you! You only need a handful of ingredients to make a perfectly nutritious and decadent vegan dessert – so decadent that you will forget you even used avocados in the first place!

Ingredients

  • 2 large 2 ripe avocados

  • 8 8 pitted dates, soaked*

  • 2/3 cup 2/3 raw cocoa powder

  • 1/2 cup 1/2 plant-based milk**

  • 3 tbsp. 3 maple syrup***

  • 1 tsp. 1 pure vanilla extract

  • 1/2 tsp. 1/2 salt

  • Toppings of your choice****

Directions

  • Add all ingredients to a blender or food processor and blend until completely smooth. Then spoon out the contents into glasses or serving dishes.
  • Place the mousse in the fridge for about an hour or two in order for the mousse to cool off. It will also improve the consistency of the mousse.
  • After this time, add any toppings you desire or simply enjoy as is!

Notes

  • * I recommend soaking the dates in a glass of tepid water for approximately 15 minutes. This is so the dates become plump, juicy and soft.
  • ** My preference is oat milk. Can also work well with almond and soy milk. I wouldn’t suggest rice milk as it consistency is too light.
  • *** Also works well with other sweeteners (e.g agave syrup)
  • **** In the picture, the toppings are red currants, desiccated coconut and mint. Some other great toppings are crumbled biscuits, nuts, other berries or vegan ice cream!
  • TO STORE: Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 4 days. Make sure the mousse is either covered or placed in a container.
